Smoke Alarms can save lives, but only if you have them in your home, and they are properly maintained. Even a properly maintained smoke alarm will not last forever- the lifespan of a smoke alarm is 10 years!

Check the date on your smoke alarm. If your smoke alarm was installed before February 2003, it needs to be replaced.

SmokeAlarm

Every year over 3,000 people lose their lives in home fires, and, most of these deaths occur in homes that didn’t have a working smoke alarm.

Residents of Toledo can visit their local Toledo Fire & Rescue station and, after completing a short form, receive smoke alarms at no cost to them.

The other part of home fire safety is having an Escape Plan. Prepare and practice an escape route with all residents in the home, especially children. Have two ways to exit from every room in your house, and a meeting place outside where you can call 911 after you safely escaped.
