S.A.F.E.  (Senior Advocates for Fire Education)

The Senior Advocates for Fire Education program began in the spring of 2005. It was determined that the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department, with the assistance of the American Red Cross and the Area Office On Aging of Northwestern Ohio, Inc., could utilize a number of senior citizen volunteers that would welcome the opportunity to serve their city and the department. They would be used to perform jobs that firefighters had not traditionally been able to perform.

The SAFE Volunteers will promote safety and prevention of fire emergencies through education, distribution of information and demonstrations to seniors and children in the community. This program may include citizens of all ages in the future.

The SAFE program provides valuable information and rewards the volunteers with the satisfaction that they have made a difference.

Volunteer Requirements:

◆ Must be age 55 or older

◆ Possess a valid operator’s license

◆ Possess a high school diploma or equivalent

◆ Successfully complete a background investigation

◆ Be physically able to perform the duties

◆ Generally requested that the program participants volunteer a minimum of 12 hours per month

◆ Accept assignment as requested

◆ Successfully complete all training required for assignment as a SAFE volunteer

◆ Report for required training as the department requires

◆ Must be familiar with the City of Toledo and able to read a map

The SAFE program will attempt to promote safety and prevent fire emergencies through education, distribution of information and demonstrations to senior and children in the community. This program may include citizens of all ages in the future.

The SAFE Volunteers will represent the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department to the best of their ability and assist those in need as per their training and make them aware of and/or get them in contact with the appropriate agencies.

The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department will provide training, planning, control, support and organization for the SAFE Volunteers.

Through participation in this program the department hopes the volunteer will gain insight into the operations of the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department. It is hoped that the volunteers will learn new skills and have personal growth as a result of their time in the SAFE program.
