On March 1, 2013 Kathy Mayer, Toledo Firefighter/Paramedic retired. This event doesn’t seem significant until you learn that she was one of the first females hired by the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department back in 1984.
Kathy was one of nine females hired in a class that totaled 64 recruits. The “drill tower” was at the old Maumee Valley Hospital on Arlington Avenue.
Kathy received her E.M.T. – Paramedic certification on June 15, 1986. During her career Kathy also received a Certificate of Special Recognition in 1999, and a Life Saving Award on June 10, 2001.
Currently there is 29 members of her class still serving on the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department.
