In a gesture of kindness that speaks to the strength of our great city, the Toledo Mud Hens invited the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department to participate in the Mud Hens Opening Day ceremonies at Fifth Third Field on Friday, April 4, 2014.

Toledo Fire & Rescue Honor Guard presented the colors, Pipes & Drums played Amazing Grace following a moment of silence to remember Privates Steve Machcinski and Jamie Dickman. Private Dan Desmond and his son, Devon, sang the National Anthem to round out the ceremony. Lt. George Simko, Private Mark Klempner from Engine 3,  and special guests, Grace Hoye and Brandon Hoye, Steve’s niece and nephew, helped to throw the first pitches.

While the weather in Toledo may be inconsistent, the support that Toledo Fire & Rescue has received and continues to receive from our city and its citizens does not waiver. We continue to heal and look to the future knowing that we live and serve in a great city that helps us to remember and honor the sacrifices of Private Machcinski, Private Dickman, as well as the other 47 Toledo Firefighters that have died in the line of duty protecting our city.

Here’s to the start of another fantastic baseball season–Let’s Go Hen’s!
