In a short note to Chief Steve Abraira of Boston Fire, just days following the bombing in Boston, Chief Santiago told Chief Abraira “Our department’s thoughts and prayers are with you and your department. We are proud of your response to this tragic event and we support you during this time.” Surprisingly, with all that was going on in Boston, Chief Abraira took the time to send a short response.

Since September 11, 2001, the level of awareness and preparedness for these types of incidents has improved tremendously. This is due to enacting new protocols with regards to response, training and collaboration with local and state agencies, as well as federal funding that has supported the purchase of equipment and additional training.
